This chart shows the progression of power modifications that I have performed on the car since it was new. I am often asked what the "best" order is for performing these modifications, and while there is no one correct answer, most people generally start with the air intake and then work their way back down the exhaust. The closer one gets to the muffler/tail pipe the less effective power modifications become, which is why the air intake and Y-Pipe combination give the most bang for the buck. Another important factor to consider is noise. For best noise suppression in the Maxima it is wise to leave the stock muffler on. The stock muffler is chambered and is extremely effective at eliminating the drone that the VQ30 engine makes between 2200 and 2500 RPM. You can generally modify the heck out of the upstream exhaust with very little, if any, noise penalty but once you add a straight-through performance muffler the car will become extremely loud inside the cabin. This is why I chose to eliminate the Stillen muffler and go back to stock. The car is very powerful and still extremely quiet.
